Synchronous Session 7: Facilitating Transformative RPGs
For this synchronous session, you will be divided into groups and play together.
Practicalities
You will join a group under the People tab labeled Facilitation Group. Together with the group members, you will decide on a date and time to meet online and run the session. Plan for 30 minutes per group member, so if there are four participants in the group, the session will take 2 hours.
You will need to decide together how to meet. If one of you has an institutional Zoom account, we recommend using that, but decide which platform to use.
The session
During the session, you will all facilitate your own scenario and also play the other group members’ scenarios. Each person will get half an hour during which they will facilitate their scenario (max 20 min) and have time after for feedback.
Feedback
The feedback part is run by the person who just facilitated. The facilitator asks the players questions that they want answered or discussed. Focus on facilitation rather than the design.
Notes: As a player, don’t give spontaneous, unsolicited feedback. As a facilitator, it can be good to prep some things you think you will want to get feedback on, but also adapt to what happens during the session.
Example of things you could ask:
- * “Did you feel I stopped the game at the right time or should you have been given less or more time?”
- * “As a player, can you think of something that I, as a facilitator, could have done that would have helped you support your role-play?”
- * “Were there any parts where you felt my instructions could have been clearer?”
- * “Do you have any ideas about how or when to cut the scene more effectively? How did it feel for you when I cut?”
- * “Did the way I facilitated during the debrief help you feel comfortable expressing yourself? If not, how do you think I could have improved?”
- * “Do you have any strategies to share for holding space in these kinds of discussions?”
