Facilitating for Inclusion

Below you can find some ideas for facilitating inclusion. You will be asked to share your experiences with your course mates in a joint discussion on the next page. You will notice that these ideas and discussion questions connect well to our ROCKET DEI Teacher Guideline, which we shared with you in the core module!

Learning in a diverse setting can foster students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which is often best achieved through a pedagogy that promotes interaction and the exchange of perspectives. To facilitate for inclusion while using flipped or active learning strategies, please consider the following:

  • ● Scaffolding of active learning activities is key for effective learning – for example, by using strategies like 1-2-4-all, groups of mixed ability, online polls or discussion boards, reflective writing, or a visual overview of main points on a white board;
  • ● Active learning classrooms can make learning harder for some students, due to auditory distractions, visual distractions and communication issues;
  • ● Silence in the classroom might be due to cultural and personal factors;
  • ● Offering choice and variety that fit the learning outcomes is important, because not all activities work equally well for all students.

You can facilitate for inclusion in your lectures by providing a clear structure, pacing the information you deliver, making sure language doesn’t get in the way, offering multiple means of representation, incorporating interactive activities in your lecture, and sharing lecture materials. Finally, it’s important to consider the diversity in the content of your lecture and study materials, as the next page explores.
